Print logbook to paper?

Post by Bushi »

Hi,

I can't seem to spot if this documented as a feature.. but it's a simple question, can dive manager or Dive Log DT (or even the phone app) print the dive logs in a usable format to to put together a reasonable looking paper log book? I can't figure out how to test this directly (maybe add sample data to dive manager?) without buying either the iphone app or DT to setup data and see what can be printed. Just printing from dive manager to pdf was not encouraging, just showed the selection side bar.

As somebody who still has a bunch of data locked into the old Treo Aqua DiveLog (I would kill to be able to import that directly, since I never managed the mind number computer fu to get it to paper) I'm a little gun shy about not being able to make a paper back up easily why jumping into a new $$ log system.

Personally I dream of the day when when the dive computers will have Blue tooth and can just be pointed to any device with the brains to take their data and we can ditch all the middle man boxes :p.

Thanks!

Bushi,

We're sorry but No, neither Dive Log Manager (or Dive Log DT) nor Dive Log for iOS supports printing yet. This is certainly something that we hope to add in the future, but we have simply not had the resources to do it. We have had a few requests for this feature, but we generally get more requests for other features before that and so have been concentrating on other things first.

If you want to try out the Desktop Software, you can download Dive Log Manager from our website, or from the Mac App Store, and use it with our sample logbook to see what it would look like. You would only need to purchase a license or purchase Dive Log DT if you wanted to be able to edit the logbook on the Desktop. Otherwise, all the management functions (backup, import, transfer) are included in the free version(s). There is no good way to be able to provide a "free" version for iOS unfortunately, so you would have to purchase it.

I have talked to other customers in the past who were able to stand on their head a bit and get their Palm Aqualog data "out". Take a look for a tool called "pdb2log". It probably only works with a PC, but since this would be a one time thing, you might be able to "borrow" at PC for the transfer and get it into a format that could be imported into either Dive Log Manager or into Diving Log on the PC, and then you can get it to your iOS device. Likely not convenient or easy, but maybe "doable".

We completely understand about being "gun shy" about having your logbook data locked up in a proprietary format. All of us I think have come across this in our diving careers. Just FYI, if you're technically inclined, we use an sqlite database format as our logbook format. sqlite is supported on many platforms and operating systems and is easily "engineered". There are many tools out there that could "dump" your data from an sqlite database into something else in the future if you needed it.

When we do get printing added, you'll hear about it here in the forums so check back every so often.

Cheers,
Janice
