Merge Two Dives

Hi all,
I have been using DiveLogDT for some time now - and have been manually adding dives for years. At the same time I have been wearing a Mares Puck and using that as a computer since 2015. With the Mares, I had never downloaded the data until today. So now I have a Dive Profile with none of my notes, calculations, signatures, etc... from the Mares puck - and a dive with no other information but the time/date, profile and temperature.
I cannot figure out a way to add the dive profile to my already written out dives.... or add the written out information to the dive profile.
The append feature does not work - it states that both dives need a profile to merge and obviously no profile exists for the ones I typed.
Thanks for any help - would love to clean up my log book.
Vince

Hi,
There are two concepts with regards to dealing with a pair of dives. The one that you are trying to do is, what we call, "merging" two dives. The other (that you apparently found) we call "appending" dives. The former is what allows you to update an existing dive with data from another imported or downloaded dive to, for example, add a profile to a dive that was entered manually (this is what you want to do). The later is designed for those cases where you surface for a period of time during a dive so that your dive computer records it as two dives but you want it to are treated as a single dive. In this case you "append" the second dive to the end of the first dive to create a single dive.
To achieve what you want to do you need to do it at the time you download your dive computer or when you import the data from another logbook (don't worry, I'll explain how you can "fix" your existing dives without downloading your computer again in a second). In both cases, when you download your dive computer or import from another file you'll have the list of dives available to import in the top panel and the list of existing dives in your logbook in the lower panel. After you select the dives to import into your existing logbook but before you click the "Import" button, select the first dive in the lower panel that matches the first dive you selected in the upper panel (this will update the "Start Dive #") and then click the "Import" button. DiveLogDT will proceed to import each dive selected in the upper panel "merging" the data available with the data already entered in the corresponding dive already in your logbook.
It is important to note that there is no attempt made to "match" the dives. We simple take each dive selected in the upper panel and apply it in turn to each dive in order in the lower panel. So you do need to make sure that if you pick 5 dives in the top panel they should be "merged" with the 5 dives starting wth the one you pick in the lower panel. Otherwise you'll want to do the import in stages.
Since you already have both your manual enter dives and your dive computer dives in your logbook, you'll need to use the "IMPORT->Dive Log" option to use this "merge" feature to avoid downloading your computer again. To do this you'll want to make a copy of your logbook (make sure DiveLogDT is not running and locate the "*.sql" file that is your logbook in the finder and duplicate it). Then start DiveLogDT and click on the "Dive Log" option under IMPORT in the sidebar and then click on the "File" button to open the copy of your logbook that you just made. Then you can pick a dive that is just the profile data from the dive computer in the upper panel and the matching "manually" entered dive in the lower panel and click "Import". This will merge those dives. You can then delete the dive computer dive from your logbook using the Dives tab.
Of course, you can simplify this process and do it in bulk by removing all the dive computer dives from your final logbook and then select multiple dives from the "copy" (you can use "command-click" to select discontiguous dives so you can skip overt manually enter dives) and then click the first matching dive in the lower panel before clicking "Import" (just be careful that they line up one for one .... making a back up using File->Backup before you start is a good idea).
Going forward you can manually enter your dives first and then "merge" them as you download your dive computer or you can download your dive computer and then manually edit the creed dives.
I hope that helps.
Cheers,
Greg
