Hi all, I just purchased the cressi leonardo dive computer and would like to be able to download my dive logs to my computer. However, the irda device that cressi sells is $100+. Can I just use an everyday irda detector from best buy that would cost $20? Would this work?

Hi,

Unfortunately we do not currently support downloading the Cressi Leonard in either our iOS product (Dive Log) or or Mac products (Dive Log Manager or Dive Log DT). We are interested in adding support for the Cressi products but in the case of Dive Log for iOS we are waiting for a version of DCbuddy that support IrDA and in both the Mac and iOS case we also need to secure access to a Cressi dive computer for testing with.

That said, I do not know which IrDA USB adaptor that Cressi sells, but I suspect they are just relabeling a "white label" IrDA to USB adaptor from a 3rd party maker. If you can find a white label device that uses the same chip set and shows up with the same USB Vendor ID and Product ID as the one sold by Cressi it will most likely work with the software you intend to use to download your device. Right now, I suspect the only options to download the Cressi Leonardo are on a Windows PC (although there might be Mac options that I'm not aware of). Depending on the software that you intend to use, it is possible that any device that has a Windows device driver available will work *BUT* you should check with the developer of the software that you intend to use to make sure this is the case.

Note that you can not use any IrDA to USB adaptor with the iPhone or iPad due to licensing restrictions that Apple places on accessing USB devices so neither the Cressi device or a 3rd party device will help in the case of iOS.

If you are trying to download your Leonardo on a Mac you can run most logbook applications for the PC under a virtual PC solution like VMWare Fusion or Parallels Desktop (you also need a copy of Windows). One desktop application that works well in this way is Diving Log 5.0 (www.divinglog.de). Diving Log 5.0 does have support for the Cressi Leonardo and is also able to sync via Wi-Fi with our Dive Log on iOS product. Again, you should contact the developer of Diving Log 5.0 to find out which IrDA adaptors might work with their product.

I hope that helps.

Cheers,

Greg

I had th esame issues and got increasingly fed up with Cressi and their buggy IR interface. I have now moved on to a Suunto D4i wich I can sync directly to my iPhone or iPad using the DC Buddy. The Cressi now just serves as emergency backup

Yes, its a bit of investment for the D4i and the DC Buddy but synching dives has never benn easier and more fun to do.
