Hi
Is there a chance to use iCloud as storage/backup/sync?
Cheers

iCloud storage and sync
Re: iCloud storage and sync
Hi Michal,
Dive Log participates in the normal iTunes/iCloud backup strategy. So if you have chosen to have your iPhone backed up via iCloud then all your apps (including Dive Log) will have their data backed up to your iCloud account. This backup is the same as the iTunes backup in the sense that it is designed for a catastrophic situation (like you loose your iPhone and need to restore your data to a new device) and is not really useful if you want to recover just your Dive Log logbook (you need to restore your entire phone back to the state of the last backup to restore anything using this system).
We are currently working on an iCloud based backup/sync process that is similar to what you can do with the compatible desktop applications today. This is a difficult task because of the way that iCloud's Document Storage architecture works, but we are making good progress. We want to make sure that it is very well tested before releasing it as there are many more opportunities for issues in this kind of syncing.
I would certainly recommend that you continue to use one of the compatible desktop applications for backup/sync until we are able to release the iCloud based solution to ensure that your logbook is safely backed up. These links:

provide some additional background on using the desktop syncing options if you are not already familiar with them.

Greg

Re: iCloud storage and sync
iCloud and iTunes can back up most data on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch.
Backed-up information includes purchased music, TV shows, apps, and books*; photos and video in the Camera Roll; device settings (for example, Phone Favorites, Wallpaper, and Mail, Contacts, Calendar accounts); app data; Home screen and app organization; Messages (iMessage, SMS, and MMS), ringtones, and more. Media files synced from your computer aren’t backed up, but can be restored by syncing with iTunes.

Vote! Vote! Vote!
Syncing directly between IPad and iPhone would be a groundbreaking feature!!!!!!
Go! Go! Go!
@all reply to this if you also would like to have this feature, so devs know how important it is and it might get prioritized in the dev roadmap.
Cheers,
Juergen

Re: iCloud storage and sync
Hi Juergen,
Don't worry, we are very motivated to release iCloud sync support for Dive Log on iOS. We are actively working on it and will release it as soon as it is fully tested (there are many ways that iCloud syncing can cause problem so we want to make sure that it is full tested so that no one has a bad experience). It is good to hear that it will be of value to you once we make it available. It is always good to know that there are users for the features we add.
Cheers,
Greg

Re: iCloud storage and sync
Wonderful news to hear Greg, I will be eagerly awaiting it.
Even though I keep all my logs backed up in multiple locations via dropbox, having the automatic iCloud synchronisation/storage would just make everything feel all the more comfortable

Re: iCloud storage and sync
A way to sync iPhone and iPad without a PC/Mac and without Internet connection would be the ultimate sync.
I like to use the iPhone for taking pictures of the dive place for dive log because the phone is with me most of the time anyways.
I also use it to do a very rough dive log.
Later after all dives are finished and there is time to reflect the day I would like to use my iPad to write comments - I usually write a lot, more than "there was a big fish'' so it is more convenient on the bigger iPad screen.
I don't take my laptop to holiday or dive trips, but I use it when I'm back home to read out my dive profile from my Cobalt and complete the logbook.
Maybe Bluetooth link or personal hotspot could work?

Re: iCloud storage and sync
I certainly agree that "internet fee" wireless syncing is very valuable and it is something that we are looking at. We did take a run at using Bluetooth, but that proved to be a little too unreliable for safely syncing complete logbooks (Bluetooth itself was not necessarily an issue, but the access to Bluetooth via the available iOS API's proved to be a little problematic due to it's intentionally limited nature). There are some newer technologies on the horizon that look very promising to support direct iOS to iOS device syncing that we are currently hoping will be part of the solution.
Personal Hotspot (i.e. via the iPhone/iPad feature) is a little problematic because you need to have a Cellular data connection available before Personal Hotspot is enabled (it is a carrier enabled feature) so it is a bit hit an miss, specially if you are traveling internationally. A portable router could be used (we'd still have to add some support in Dive Log), but most people that travel without a laptop are also not interested in traveling with an additional networking device.
Much of the underlying support that we are adding to Dive Log to support iCloud syncing is also required for other forms of direct device to device syncing, so with that in place we are hopeful that we can get a solution in place that does not require an existing network infrastructure.
Thanks for the feedback. We really appreciate know what is important to users as it makes it much easier to prioritize our efforts effectively.

Greg
