Sync with Garmin Descent MK2I

Post by SkyPetr »

Hi!

First of all thanks a lot for the best dive log app for Mac and IOS.

I just bought new dive computer - Garmin Descent MK2I and I'm looking for solution how to sync it with Dive log.
Is it possible to transfer Dive Log DL7 to Garmin Fit format?

Thank you in advance,
Petr

Hi Peter,

The Garmin Decent MK2i is a great computer. Unfortunately, due to some design decisions that Garmin have made, it is not possible for any app other than their Connect or Dive apps to directly download the device via Bluetooth (it would risk corrupting the device if one was to try doing this). We worked closely with Garmin on adding support for the Mk1 originally and while the dive team would have liked to support 3rd party apps via Bluetooth, in order to live within the wider Garmin eco-system this was not possible. The older Mk1 could be directly downloaded via USB (because they supported USB Disc mode) but the Mk2/Mk2i can not be on iOS or Mac OS as they have switch to the MTP USB protocol which is not supported directly by Apple.

So, with all that out of the way, it is possible to import your Mk2i dives into either Dive Log on iOS or DiveLogDT and DiveLogManager on macOS. What you need to do is allow your Mk2i to be dowloaded via the Connect or Dive app from Garmin so that the dives are uploaded to their Web Portal. Then sign into the Garmin Web Portal and export the Fit files you want to import to your Mac or iCloud (or other configured cloud service on iOS). Then use the Garmin Fit import option to import the files (you can select multiple Fit files at once). On iOS you'd use the "Import -> Import Garmin Fit format" option on the Synchronization tab and on macOS you'd use the "Garmin" option under "IMPORT" in the sidebar. Then select the file or files that you saved from the Garmin Web Portal and the rest should be straight forward.

I hope that helps. There is a workaround for importing directly fro the Mk2i via USB that will work only on Mac if you are interested. It is not particularly easy to use though and the web portal approach is probably the better option unless you don't have internet access. Feel free to reach out if you'd like those details.

Cheers,

Greg

Hi Greg - I wanted to revive this thread. I was looking here https://www.divinglog.com/blog/?tag=downloader
They claim support for directly downloading from MK2I - has something changed to allow this?

Hi,

No, nothing has changed. The link you sent specifically says that it is possible to directly import .fit files via USB from the MK2i. This is not a Bluetooth download but rather a way to put connect directly to the MK2i and read the data like it was a "disk". That is the work around that I mentioned in my previous post. The reason that it is a workaround is that Garmin is using the MTP on the MK2i (vs disk drive mode on the older Mk1) and the Mac does not natively support MTP (Windows does). So, on Mac, you need to use the Android Transfer app from Google to see the files and then you can import them using the Garmin Fit importer in DiveLogDT.

Sorry that I don't have more positive news for you.

Cheers,
Greg

My apologies - I seemed to miss the part where divelogdt can import the fit files - I am a happy man again, and no longer need to abandon my beloved DiveLog (and DiveLogDT). Thank you

Cheers
