Garmin Descent Mk3, perhaps???

Post by Nikk »

Hello! Let me start by saying that I have been a very happy user of the Dive Log app for the last 10 years and have logged dives from my Suunto eon and then my Shearwater Petrel with no trouble at all. I have recently bought a Garmin Descent Mk3 as I’m hoping that might just be the one watch that can do it all for me by recording all my activities including Scuba. Ideally I would like to continue to use the DiveLog app to record my dives. I have noted posts from 2020 that seem to indicate there is no easy way to do that. I was wondering if anything had changed and whether it was now possible to either log garmin dives in Dive Log or transfer all my Dive Log entries to Garmin Dive.

Hi,

You can import dives captured with Garmin's MK series of watches using Dive Log. I'm not sure which posts you are referring to, but nothing has changed in terms of Garmin's Bluetooth support that would allow a direct download by a third party application (even if one were to reverse engineer the protocol as we do for most devices, Garmin's strategy requires certain management of the on watch data that would be corrupted if it were downloaded by a third party app). Dive Log (and our partner's desktop applications) can export data in a number of formats. I don't know if Garmin's app supports importing any of those formats (I rather doubt it) but you could look to see what file formats they do support.

If you do want to load your dives from your Garmin device to Dive Log, you do need to first import those dives into either the Garmin Connect app or the Garmin Dive App via Bluetooth and let that data upload to Garmin's web portal. You can then export the Garmin .fit files from the Garmin web portal to a location that can be reached by Dive Log (iCloud Drive, Google Drive, Dropbox or your local iPhone file storage) and then use the "Import -> Import Garmin FIT format" option on the Synchronize tab to import that data.

Note that it is possible to directly import via a USB connection using the Windows app Diving Log 6.0 (www.divinglog.de) that is compatible with Dive Log on iOS. Unfortunately, a similar approach can not easily be taken on a Mac since Garmin switch from the USB Mass Storage protocol of the MK1 to the MTP used on the MK2 and later (It can be done, but you need to also install a MTP capable application like Android Transfer on your Mac).

Garmin makes great kit and I'm sure they have their reasons for the design choices they have made with their dive transfer support, but unfortunately it leaves for a slightly more complicated process than you are use to with your previous Suunto and Shearwater devices.

Please feel free to reach out if you need additional information.

Cheers,

Greg
