Suunto Ocean

Post by balise »

Hello there

Thanks for making the app, it is the best one i've tried for a long time, with my Aqualung i470tc. I know the Suunto Ocean is a brand new computer and I expect what it is to be expected from a brand new product, but I was wondering if you were planing on supporting the computer, and if you had an ETA on the development of the connexion.

Thanks

Simon

Hi Simon,

Thank you for your inquiry about support for the Suunto Ocean. As you correctly state, the Ocean is very new and will require significant effort to add support for direct Bluetooth download in Dive Log. Unfortunately Suunto had made significant changes from their earlier download protocol for their EON/D5 line of Bluetooth enabled computers so we need to understand the new protocol (and probably data format) before we can add support. It is very difficult to know how long this will take.

In the mean time, it is possible to export Fit format files from the Suunto iOS app and import those files into Dive Log using the Synchronization tab's Import -> Import Garmin Fit Format file option (we've updated this importer to support the particular way that Suunto uses the Fit file format). The results are some what limited at the moment as Suunto does not export all data via Fit (for example, we have not seen tank pressure data in examples we have so far). However, it is a way to get the basic profile data and other aspects of your Ocean's data into Dive Log. Here is a link to a Suunto article that details how to export Fit format files from their app:

Any news on this Greg? I’ve just changed from eon steel and would like to keep going with the 500+ dives I have logged with DiveLog. Thank you. Ian

HI Ian,

No, nothing new to report. You can still use the option to export your Suunto data to the FIT File Format and import that into Dive Log using the Synchronization tab's Import -> Import Garmin FIT format feature.

I wish that I had more to report, but it is a difficult device to add support for,

Cheers,

Greg

Hi,

No, sorry there is no further update on direct Bluetooth download for the Ocean. We have over time added more capabilities to the FIT format import for the Ocean as Suunto updates the way they use the format (although there are still features that we'd like to see them support in their export that they do not yet do). Unfortunately the download protocol and the data format for the Ocean is very different from the older Suunto EON line of computers so it is a zero based effort and their protocol is quite difficult to reverse engineering.

Sorry that I don't have a more encouraging update for you.

Cheers,

Greg

Greg

So I can manage my own expectations are you really saying that support for the Ocean may never happen ?

Just being a bit pedantic, but we do currently support the Ocean via FIT file import (this is the same way that the Garmin devices are supported and the only way that Garamin can be supported because of design decisions that Garmin took).

Given that I suspect what you really are asking is if direct Bluetooth download may never happen. I would never recommend making a purchase decision based on future possible capabilities. Until something is implemented and released, there is no guarantee that it will be possible.

We work with a larger group of developer to support dive computer downloads (libdivecomputer). Various developer contribute to this effort based on devices that they have access to and have managed to reverse engineer. This group greatly improves the number of devices that any single developer could provide coverage for. We (Dive Log/DiveLogDT) have put some effort into support for the Ocean as have some other developers. We have all found the same challenges. The previous efforts to support the Suunto EON devices were also quite difficult and took quite a long time before we were able to ship a solution.

So the bottom line is that yes it is possible that we will never manage to support the Ocean beyond the current FIT format import. However it is not a forgone conclusion that we can never add support but I would not expect it in the near future.

I hope that helps, even if it is not what you are hoping to hear.

Cheers,
Greg

Thank you Greg, I really appreciate the time and trouble you have taken to give me a full answer.

I have complained to Suunto about the lack of connectivity. I doubt it will do me any good as I suspect tying hardware to their software is a prelude to a subscription service.

I refuse to use the suunto app for my dive log and look forward (in hope) to the happy day when you 'crack it'.

Thank you
Ian
