Technical Diving and other questions

Post by lifeunderwater »

Hi,

I am anew user of your software. I made the investment in the paid version, and have it installed and running. I reported a few bugs via email so I will leave them out of this post.

Do you have any plans to add multi-tank, multi-gas support? Also, I read about the use of Mac-Dive for other integrations and would like to know if you plan to support other computers in the future, specifically Sensus Ultra. I do not want to install or buy another dive log to create an integration to yours. I like where you are going with this log and hope you have a good, aggressive schedule for getting out new feature like the two above.

Looking forward to hearing from you!

Multi-Tank, Multi Gas support is in development. There is already support for it in the underlying database, but we have not yet exposed it in the user interface. This latter functionality is done in development for Dive Log Manager/Dive Log DT, but we could use some more multi-tank, multi-gas data to test it with. We have limited ways at the moment to import it, but contact us directly if you wish to contribute.

The question of adding support for different models of dive computers is complex. It's difficult to find out specific information about a dive computer and how to talk to it and how to interpret the information you get from it. A lot of manufacturers keep this information confidential and so most have to be reverse engineered. This is quite time consuming and quite expensive if you have to go buy a dive computer in order to test it with your software. Keeping up with all the different dive computers and models is an enormous task and there are many *other* people that work very hard to do this. The other issue is that the software supplied by the manufacturer will almost always be better and more up to date at knowing the in's and out's of their own models of computers.

So our general philosophy is to embrace the dive manufacturers software, let them do all the specific work of downloading and getting all the information possible from all their various dive computer models, and then we'll do the work of understanding their software instead. We can import all the same information from their software as we can from downloading their dive computers.

MacDive is a great program and the developer does a lot of work supporting a wide range of dive computers. So, if we don't support your particular dive computer, like the Sensus Ultra, Mac Dive does. You can use it to download your dive computer and then use Dive Log Manager/Dive Log DT to import all the same information from MacDive. It's 2 steps instead of 1, but we work to make them very easy and fast steps.

So it will probably be some time until we support a Sensus Ultra directly. We're concentrating first on other manufacturers and have not tried to contact them to see if they are willing/able to support our development or not.

Hope that gives you an idea of where we're going. Please feel free to contact us with any questions.
Cheers,
Janice

Thanks for the reply! I would be happy to contribute dives. Just tell me what you need.

As for the Sensus...I understand the commentary for most dive computers. Vendor specific dive logs are free and terrible. One would be crazy to lock themselves in to a specific dive computer software package. It is a real shame the computer manufactures are not more forthcoming...I do understand your dilemma. However, the Sensus (Reefnet) provides open access to their developer guide for this specific purpose. I use the Sensus for all of my dives, recreational and technical. I am sure others do as well. I can send you the developers guide if it would help.

Thanks again for the detailed reply. I look forward to seeing (and testing if you like) the changes you described.

Alex
